By Melinda Larke - NW Seattle and Cherry Valley Macaroni Kid March 5, 2020

All families love a great trip to get a change of scenery, explore new places, and make some family memories.  Sometimes we want to really go big and have an epic trip across the country or across the world.  Sometimes we just need a day or weekend away.  Several Washington State Macaroni Kid publisher Mom's have gotten together to help you plan the perfect day or weekend away in some of the best parts of Washington State.

Only 30 miles from Seattle and straddling the counties of Snohomish and King County, are the communities of Monroe, Duvall, and Carnation.  These family oriented communities not only have tons of family fun but also have something for everyone to enjoy; sports, outdoor, and agricultural activities.  Read on to find out my favorites and some great ways to make wonderful family memories.

THINGS TO DO -

The Evergreen State Fairgrounds

There is always something going on at the fairgrounds!  My favorites are -

Evergreen Speedway - A premier race track in the PNW, Evergreen Speedway has racing events happening year round.  Their main races happen from April to October every Saturday night.  Kids 10 and under are free, making this a very affordable night out with the family!

The Evergreen State Fair - At the end of August the fairgrounds come alive for two weeks with the Evergreen State Fair.  Rides, food, animals, entertainment, and more can all be found at the fair!  This is a not miss event for some great family fun.

The Reptile Zoo - Have a reptile or an animal lover in your life?  The Reptile Zoo just outside of Monroe is the place to go!  So many reptiles to see and even some fun hands-on experiences to round out your experience.

Great Northern & Cascade Railway (free) - Keep heading east on HWY 2 and you will come to the town of Skykomish.  Sykkomish is home to the Great Northern & Cascade Railway, a 1/8 scale train that you and the kiddos can ride on as many times as you would like!  While you are there check out the train depot with some fun history of train in the Skykomish Valley.  The train runs every weekend from May to October.  On your way there or back be sure to stop at one of the fun drive ins that sit on HWY 2.  Both Alpen Drive-In and Zekes Drive In are great choices for a fun family meal.

Remlinger Farms - Entertaining kids of all ages, Remlinger Farms has a country fair fun park with over 25 rides and attractions geared especially for kids and families.  They also have several u-pick farms for both berries and pumpkins in the fall.  While you are there, grab some famous Remlinger Pies and stop in the cafe for a quick bite or ice cream.

Take a Hike - This area is surrounded by beautiful forested land and some great hikes. Here are some favorites of the area -

Lord Hill Regional Park

Paradise Valley Conservation Area

Wallace Falls

Cherry Creek Falls

PLACES TO EAT -

Carnation Café - Located in Carnation you get the small town café atmosphere combined with some fantastic food and great staff!

Red Pepper Pizza - Located in both Duvall and Carnation, this is a great place to stop for some good pizza.  They have lots of different varieties of pizza as well as pasta, sandwiches, salads, and more.  It is a great place to go after a day of fun and exploring.

The Amarillo - Looking for some BBQ, The Amarillo in Monroe is the place to go. They have great food and a great kids menu to keep even the pickiest of eaters happy!
