5 Ways to Organize Your Home For Distance Learning

By Melinda Larke - NW Seattle Macaroni Kid August 13, 2020

It is official, we will be starting the school year with distance learning.  All the school supplies, books, papers and learning areas will now be in your home. Unless you want to be stepping on, over, and running into these things for the next several months (or more), organization will be needed.  I have asked Sarah Sary, an Independent Consultant with Thirty-One Gifts, and a former teacher herself, to help me find some solutions to organizing your home for distance learning success.

1. Find a Work Space - The most important thing you will need to do to guarantee success in distance learning is find a great place for the kids to work.  For kids K-6th grade,  I would recommend a place close to you. The kitchen table, a small desk placed in the living room or next to you in your office.  They will need you to help keep them on task, to help them through challenges, and to celebrate their successes.  Older kids may do well with a desk in their room as long as they don't distracted too easily.  Be prepared to move and shift before you find the perfect spot.

2. Keep All the Pens & Pencils Together - I don't know about you, but pens, pencils, scissors, and all that other little stuff just disappears in my house. Or, I endlessly step on them throughout the day.   Designate a spot for all that stuff first thing. A place where they can get it from and most importantly, put it back when they are finished. I love the idea of the Close to Home Caddy.  It gives you lots of space to put your supplies and can be carried around from place to place if needed. Little and big hands would easily be able to clean up all their small supplies at the end of the school day.  For a smaller space, the Get Creative pouches are high quality and durable for all the abuse they will endure this year. They come in many different shapes to fit all of your needs. The Get Creative Rectangle Pouch is big enough to fit those headphones that always seem to get lost in my house or try the Zipper Pouch!

3.Paperwork- Oh, paperwork, sometimes the bane of our existence. Doing school at home just means more paperwork in your home; on your counters, on your tables, in your drawers.  Keep everyone's school paperwork organized with the Fold N' File!   Grab some standard hanging file folders and put each kids paperwork in one folder, or organize by class.  You and your children will know right where to go when they need something!  It even collapses down when you no longer need it, although I am sure you can find another use for it.

4. Totes, Totes, and More Totes - Thirty-One totes are great for so many things!  When it comes to school organization they are great for keeping everything in one place.  They can then be hung up, toted around, and again very easy for kids to clean up into.  Depending on how much room you need there are many options; large, small, zip top and more.  Get one for each child to keep things from intermingling and getting lost.  With many different prints you can have each child pick their favorites and get even more excited for organization.

5. Getting Out - School work doesn't always have to be done at home.  Get out and try some new scenery.  The park on nice days, the library (once it reopens) is a great and quiet place to get some work done,. Part of a pod this year? You will want to take your work with you. While the totes and pouches are perfect for your school supplies, you don't want to forget food!  A hungry child does not learn well and they aren't much fun.  Grab a small or large thermal, depending on the size for your family, or get each child their own lunch boxes

Schooling several different children on several different schedules with so many different school supplies while trying to keep everything else organized will be a challenge. I hope that by using some of these tips, things may be a little less stressful for you this school year.
