Using the Workbox System to Organize Your School Day

By Melinda Larke - NW Seattle Macaroni Kid August 20, 2020

As we head into the 2020-2021 school year, many families are looking for great ways to organize their school days, keeping the kids on task and motivated.  I wanted to introduce you to the workbox system.  The workbox system uses drawers, storage boxes, or magazine file holders.  Each day (or the night before) you would organize each of your child's assignments into one drawer, box, or file holder, whatever you are using.  Each assignment/subject should have its own spot.

Pros -

  • Everything is in one spot - Your textbooks, worksheets, and everything that you need for that subject/assignment are in that one spot so there is no rushing around and searching for things before you can start.
  •  Children can work independently - Children  work through the boxes as the day progresses.  They start with the first box and end with the last.  No need to ask you what is next.
  • Keeps your child motivated - Your children have a visual idea of how much they have completed and how much more they have left.  No asking you a million times during the day.
  • It is adaptable - This system can be tweaked to make it work for you and your family.

Cons -

  • It takes some planning - I mean what doesn't take planning in life, but this does require you to know the day before what you will be doing the next day and get it all organized.  It should only take 30-60 minutes depending on how many kids you have.
  • Each child needs their own boxes - This can make things a little expensive at first getting the drawers, boxes, etc. for each child.  Trying to have children share boxes would just make things so complicated.  I do feel like it is a great investment in your sanity.

Tips -

  • Add some fun stuff into your boxes -  Have more boxes then assignments? Add in some fun surprises for your kiddos. A snack, a fun art project, or just a piece of paper that gives them some fun ways to move their body.
  • Include everything they need for each assignment - Remember to include all the tools they will need for each assignment. Cutting stuff? Don't forget the scissors.  Pencils, special paper, etc.  Don't make your child or you run around the house and find the necessary equipment for the assignment which cause frustration and wastes time.  Or, designate a drawer just for school supplies that they can grab from to complete their assignments.  Remember to have enough for everyone.
  • Have an assignment that are completed online or without textbooks/worksheets? - Sometimes the assignment is on the computer, or is movement based. How do you include that?  Make up some cards for those assignments that you can reuse.  Don't forget the usernames and passwords on the card if they are needed for the work to be done.

Happy schooling!
